Thankful For What I Have and What I Have Lost

Thankful

I really didn’t intend to write a Thanksgiving post. To me those sort of posts seem overly sappy or completely contrived. My goal is to do neither, but I think I may end up more on the side of sappy, so bear with me, okay?

I am so thankful for my family. I have a beautiful wife that loves me despite the fact that I am such a screw up. She stands by my side and supports me in everything I do, even when my choices are not always the best. I love you, Tracy.

I am thankful for my boys. Connor and Zachary are my soul. They are terrific young men full of so much potential. I love watching them, talking with them, and playing with them. They are not perfect, and there are times I am tempted to lock them outside, but they are going to turn into world changing men some day.

Kaitlyn is my heart. She is the perfect little addition to our family, and she has made all of us into so much more than we were before. When I come home and she hugs my leg and squeals, I cannot imagine anything ruining my day. Watching her discover the world around her has been amazing and it makes me eager to start each new day.

Last month I lost a good friend. I had only known Jan for a couple of years really, but in that time we were close and talked often. She had a myriad of health problems and it should not have been a surprise to me that she passed away at the beginning of October. She had been sick more and more frequently, and when I stopped hearing from her I suspected the worst. Smetimes I hate being right.

I should have written about her passing weeks ago, but I could never bring myself to do it, as if putting words to paper made her death real. I never got to meet Jan in person, but that doesn’t make the loss any less personal.

Jan Marie Parupia was my friend, she designed the cover for my first book and the second. She made picture books for my family and sent me art books for Zachary. I am sad that she has gone, but I hope she is at peace and no longer in pain. I am thankful for the time I knew her and look forward to seeing her again some day.
