Whole Foods Challenge, Week One

Last week we were supposed to start our whole foods challenge. We got off to a rough start wehn my wife came down with a nasty head cold and her food needs and desires became very specific. The vegan options I had prepared were not what she had in mind and I ended up spending a lot of time running out to various restaurants and fast food chains picking up meat and dairy laden products for dinner. I am a weak man and succumbed to the meaty goodness a couple of times myself (especially once I got sick as well). So, our first week of meatlessness has not gone well. With the new week upon us we are planning on doing much better. The little bit of meat on the menu is from the freezer. I may want to go vegan, but I’m not going to waste what I have already paid for. The hardest part in the planning of meals has been the expense of non-dairy substitutes as well as not knowing what makes for a good substitute on certain items. We are learning and will do better with it soon I’m sure.

Our Small Farm Co-Op thing will be starting up again next month so we will be blessed with lots of new vegetable options to help shape our meals. I’m excited about getting back into this. The winter break has been killing me.  I look forward to lots of good spring veggies coming soon!

Whole Foods Countdown, 8 Days Remaining

This weekend was pretty good and I managed to avoid fast food altogether, though I did go out to eat on Friday and got something less than great for me. We had healthy meals over the weekend and even manage a vegan meal on Sunday night, so we’re definitely heading in the right direction, but I don’t know how prepared we will be on the first day of the challenge. One of the biggest challenges, not including the convenience factor, is the cost. While meat used to be the most expensive item we had to buy, we’ve found that cutting it out has not really saved us any money. In fact, our grocery bill has gone up some. One of these days I’m going to have to do a grocery bill analysis and see where the money is really going, but for now it looks like whole foods could bankrupt us.

So Saturday’s Karate session was awesome. I earned my first stripe on my white belt. Now I understand this is the first step in a VERY long process, but it felt good to get there. What made it truly awesome was when Connor said, “Good job, daddy. I’m proud of you.” Talk about a moonshot!

Whole Foods Countdown, 14 Days Remaining

The single greatest challenge to switching over to whole foods/vegan  will be coffee. I’m an adict. I need it in the morning and I occasionally enjoy it in the evening. I like it with cream and sugar, or a flavored creamer, neither of which fits into the new diet. We’ve been trying non-dairy creamer, which neither tastes as good or fits into the whole foods thing, and we’ve tried the milk substitutes, but none of it tastes as good. Maybe I should just give up coffee altogether rather than face daily disappointment in my morning beverage. Any suggestions out there? Continue reading “Whole Foods Countdown, 14 Days Remaining”

It Is Time For A Change

It always amazes me the way that the sermons at our church always seem to be just what I needed. This week’s sermon was about taking control of our lives. Proverbs 25:28 says, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.” This was the foundation of the sermon, and while I can’t begin to do justice to what was said (if you click the link above you can find the sermon to watch or listen to), I’ll do my best to share the gist of it. We all have things we could improve upon in ourselves, and this time of year we all vow to try, but ultimately we fail. Why do we fail? We try to do everything ourselves, so we constantly fall short, but if we ask Jesus into our hearts and listen closely he can help. While God will help if we ask for it, we still have to do a lot of the work ourselves. Part of the message was that we have to avoid procrastination and get started on making the necessary changes in our lives.

So I have started making the changes. I had actually started on Saturday with the addition of Karate to my schedule. It was a lot of fun and I hurt like hell now, but I am totally looking forward to doing it again tonight. Another planned change has been a switch to a whole foods diet starting in February. We joined an online workshop for a three-month starter course and the kick off is February 6th (You can join us here if you’re interested). As part of the process my wife and I have decided to journal the experience with an emphasis on how we feel and what we eat. I’ve decided that I’m going to start mine now, so that I have something to compare it to later. Every evening I will try to post and we’ll see how it goes.

So what changes do you need to make in your life?
